What is the CozmoNAUT Coding Curriculum?

This sequence of nine lessons is designed to introduce your students to block-based coding using Cozmo’s Code Lab app. Teamwork, communication, and creativity are critical skills in the high-tech workplace, and are incorporated throughout this curriculum. Students can also keep a CozmoNAUT journal to reflect on the challenges and successes they experience with each lesson.

The lessons place students on CozmoNAUT teams with the goal of launching Cozmo to Mars. Throughout the curriculum students will learn why we rely on robots to explore space, the tasks these robots complete, and the jobs done by humans to launch a successful mission. Each lesson follows a similar format:

Anticipatory Set - introduce the concepts students will learn using videos, discussion, and reflection.

Direct Instruction - provide the students with the information they will need to successfully complete the lesson.

Guided Practice - students will create a program with as much guidance as needed to succeed.

Independent Practice - students will remix the program created during the guided practice section to experiment with different code blocks.

Team Challenge - students are given a task for Cozmo to perform, parameters for success, and freedom to be creative.

Follow-up Activity - an optional non-digital activity that relates to the coding concepts covered in the lesson.
